THE SHAPE OF BECOMING

The Shape of Becoming explores what happens to the sense of continuity of identity as its visible appearance changes. Across all three parts, the same person remains present, yet the conditions under which they can be recognized are constantly reconfigured. Reflections, transparent surfaces, a mask, directed light, fire, and movement do not conceal an already established identity; instead, they continually construct a different version of it.

The series does not approach metamorphosis as a direct transition from an initial state to a completed form. Instead, it operates through displacement: a butterfly shifts from a real object into the construction of a mask, a mirrored reflection becomes a photographic doubling, and external distortion takes shape through a bodily gesture. Each new state retains traces of the previous one, so change does not erase identity but renders its coherence unstable.

Photography functions here as a space for experimentation: how many times can an image be divided, concealed, and reassembled while remaining an image of the same person? The final, direct gaze does not return the subject to their original version of themselves, but establishes a new, temporary point of recognition.
